Amy Schumer reveals why she fired her Doula Domino Kirke after birth (2022)

Amy Schumer has admitted that she fired actor Penn Badgley's wife Domino Kirke as her doula shortly after giving birth, because she felt insecure having a 'goddess floating around her home' while she recovered from her C-section.

The 41-year-old comedian made the confession to Kirke's husband while appearing on his podcast, Podcrushed, in which she explained to the You star, 35, that she felt 'so vulnerable' in the wake of her son's birth, she didn't have the 'strength' to have Kirke, 38, continue working with her.

Schumer - who revealed earlier this year that she had undergone liposuction in a bid to boost her confidence - described Kirke as a 'family member', having hired her during her pregnancy in order to help her through the labor and delivery process.

However, following the birth of her son Gene, now three, in May 2019, something changed.

‘The truth was, and this is pretty unfair to [Domino], after I had Gene, I was recovering from a C-section,' she told Badgley.

'Domino is like a goddess. She’s an actual floating siren around the house. And she’s so just lovely, and when she touches you, like you just kind of melt. She was really a family member.’

Reflecting on the insecurities she felt at the time, the I Feel Pretty star continued: ‘I just felt so vulnerable. I was like, I can’t have this Botticelli goddess floating around my home when I am, like, bleeding out.

‘I just didn’t have the strength to allow myself the luxury of having her around our home. I was like, "I think you can’t come anymore."’

Despite Schumer privately struggling with insecurities in the wake of her son's birth, she jokingly documented her postpartum recovery on social media, where she shared several images of herself pumping breast milk and modeling mesh hospital underwear.

Schumer welcomed her first child with husband Chris Fischer in May 2019, with the Snatched star documenting the experience in her 2020 miniseries, Expecting Amy.

Originally, the comedian had wanted to have a doula-assisted vaginal delivery, but after she began suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) which caused severe nausea and vomiting throughout her pregnancy, she decided to have a hospital C-section at 39 weeks.

Schumer went on to open up about the experience on Instagram as she reflected on how ‘lucky’ she had been to have Kirke by her side during the ordeal.

Describing Kirke (seen right with Badgley) as a 'goddess', Schumer said:‘I felt so vulnerable... I can’t have this Botticelli goddess floating around my home when I am, like, bleeding out'

She began: ‘Ok here's my post baby annoying post and my takeaway from pregnancy. Women are the s***. Men are cool and whatever but women are f— warriors and capable of anything. I was lucky enough to get to have a doula. Her name @domino_kirke @carriagehousebirth’.

The Life & Beth star then shed some light on the role doulas play during the pregnancy experience as she continued: ‘What do doulas do? I don't totally know But what she did was make me and Chris feel totally secure and supported throughout my pregnancy and the birth process. I really recommend getting one if you can.’

A doula is a trained companion, rather than a healthcare professional, who supports another individual through a significant health-related experience, such as childbirth.

Kirke, who is the older sister of Girls actress Jemima Kirke and Mozart in the Jungle Lola Kirke, is a singer and doula who co-created Carriage House Birth – which provides doula services and education.

In 2020, she stepped down from her role at the company amid criticism that the business did not prioritize anti-racism.In an apology statement, Domino said she was quitting her job as doula and co-creator to make way for diversity in leadership.

Schumer and her husband Chris Fischer had originally hoped to welcome a second child, but after a painful struggle with IVF, they decided to hold off on plans for another baby

Schumer's candid confession about her postpartum image struggles come five months after she revealed to the world on January 18 that she had undergone liposuction in a bid to feel better about her body.

The comedian took to Instagram to proudly show off the results of her procedure, sharing images of herself posing at the beach in a black bathing suit - with Schumer revealing at the time that her weight was down to 170lbs.

'I feel good. Finally,' she wrote, before going on to share more information about her struggles with endometriosis, while praising the health professionals who helped her through her medical issues.

'It's been a journey thanks for helping me get my strength back @seckinmd (endo) @jordanternermd (lipo) never thought i would do anything but talk to me after your uterus doesn't contract for 2.5 years and you turn 40. @paulvincent22 vickie Lee (acupuncture) my girl Nicole from the tox my friends and fam. Let's go!'

Two months later, she opened up about her decision to get liposuction in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, confessing that she chose to go under the knife after growing 'tired of looking at herself in the mirror'.

'It's not about needing to be slamming, because I've never been famous for being hot, but I'd reached a place where I was tired of looking at myself in the mirror,' she said.

'I feel good': Earlier this year, Schumer revealed she now weighs 170 pounds after undergoing liposuction surgery

Amy (seen in March 2022) had noticed the weight gain herself and said she'd been 'physically uncomfortable' with the extra pounds at her midsection

The Inside Amy Schumer star had previously expressed her desire to have a second child, revealing in August 2020 that she and her husband had undergone IVF in an attempt to conceive another baby.

However, Schumer said that the process of in vitro fertilization was so 'tough' on her that it made her come to the conclusion that she does not want to be pregnant again.

'We did IVF and IVF was really tough on me. I don't think I could ever do IVF again. I decided that I can't be pregnant ever again,' she said. 'We thought about a surrogate, but I think we're going to hold off for right now.'

Although she had embryos from her IVF journey, Amy and her husband had been holding off on welcoming a second child because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, in 2021 the comedian had her uterus and appendix removed in order to treat her endometriosis.

The mother-of-one had long been vocal about her battle with the condition - which causes tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes – before having to undergo the hysterectomy.
