WATER PROTECTION

I introduced a bill in 2005 that was part of a legislative package to stop large-scale water diversions. I believe the Great Lakes should be held in public trust for our children and future generations to use and enjoy. The Great Lakes and our other waterways are a vital part of our environment and our economy in northern Michigan and the U.P., and they must be protected.

The legislature recently passed a package that would regulate large-scale water withdrawals, which I supported, but it doesn't stop private companies from bottling our water and shipping it off for profit.

I pledge to continue the fight to further protect Michigan's Great Lakes and other freshwater supplies. My plan will:

  • Seriously restrict companies that want to bottle up and sell our Great Lakes for profit in other states;
  • Establish tougher penalties for those who put our Great Lakes in danger; and
  • Give local communities a voice in any proposals to divert Great Lakes water.

We must safeguard our most precious natural resource for future generations and not allow private companies and other thirsty states to sell our water for profit. The Great Lakes should stay in Michigan where they belong, and this plan will ensure they do.
