Tourism and agriculture are key industries in the 107th District. We need
to provide additional support for these economic sectors in particular, as
well as diversify the job market in northern Michigan and the U.P.
I supported the 21st Century Jobs Fund, a $2 billion economic development
plan, which will help bring good-paying jobs to Michigan in life sciences,
homeland security, alternative energy and homeland security. A portion of
the Jobs Fund also will be used for a two-year tourism and business
promotion campaign that is being hailed as the largest state marketing
endeavor of its kind.
I also supported the repeal of the Single Business Tax to ease the burden
on our businesses.
I have also sponsored Fuels of the Future legislation that would increase
agriculture opportunities for our area through the development of
renewable fuel sources, such as corn, switch-grass and forest residues.
