Our state has more than 1.8 million Michigan citizens without health care
and that must change. All of us deserve affordable health care.
Prescription drug prices are skyrocketing. I've talked to too many seniors
who can't afford the lifesaving medicines they need, and that's wrong.
Because of that, I support using the state's bulk-buying power and passing
the savings on to our residents - up to 50% on some prescription drugs.
This program, run by Illinois and joined already by Wisconsin, Missouri,
Vermont and Kansas, allows the state to contract with a Canadian
clearinghouse that connects consumers with Canadian and European
pharmacies and wholesalers approved by Illinois health inspectors. All
residents would be eligible to participate.
I also support repealing an unfair 1996 law that gives complete immunity
to drug companies when their drugs harm or even kill our citizens.
Michigan is the only state in the country that gives pharmaceutical
companies a free ride, and that needs to change.
